Weirdest error

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

Haven’t used this for a while but might be useful for anyone searching for it.

Just spent a good couple days trying to fix a pc for someone and the source of the problem turned out to be the weirdest of things.

I love dot points.

  • Windows would always keep encountering an error when trying to install software. (ie. Windows Live Messenger installer would keep on going to an error upon the installation starting (where it asks if you’d like to send data back to Microsoft).
  • ESET NOD32 and other apps would come up a blank screen when opened.
  • Untrusted certificate warnings would always come up at every available opportunity.
  • No detectable virus or malware.

Turns out the date on the computer was set to 26 August 16910.  Computer was a bit more advanced than I first thought.

Fixed the date on that and everything decides to install and run happily.
